Takayoshi Tsuchiya

Graduated from the Master’s program at Tokyo University of the Arts in 2001. Selected by the Agency for Cultural Affairs to represent Japan at the international exhibition “FILE SP 2014” (São Paulo). Exhibitions include “Travel and Romance” at Kyushu Geibunkan, Fukuoka Prefectural Museum of Art, and others (2020-21), “Regards Croisés” at Regent Center Crans-Montana (Crans-Montana/2014), “Born in 1974” at the Gunma Museum of Modern Art (2014), “2:46 and Thereafter” at Edison Place Gallery (Washington D.C./2012), among many others both domestically and internationally.

He is a professor in the Department of Art and Regional Design at Saga University. Since the late 1990s, Tsuchiya has been crossing over various forms of expression including painting, sculpture, photography, video, installation, and media art, presenting conceptual works that engage with human consciousness and perception.
His current work is tied to the prestigious Taroemon Nakazato Kiln, renowned for Karatsu ware since the Azuchi-Momoyama period. This kiln has produced countless masterpieces over the generations. The featured work consists of photographic pieces capturing the shattered remains of pottery that, after firing at the kiln, were not recognized as finished works by the head of the kiln and were thus discarded without being named. The transformation of these high-temperature creations into cool, photographic representations is in alignment with the theme of this exhibition.
