Mio Yamato
Mio Yamato has continued to create her Repetition series, which consists of dots individually hand-painted with oil paint and lines carefully drawn with a pen. Without having a specific completed image in mind, the repetition of these simple actions results in a canvas that captures the passage of time, creating images that are curiously organic and familiar.
Through this painstaking process, Yamato attempts to visualize the sublime systems and principles of nature, much like the gradual formation of tree rings over time, following the laws of nature.
Mio Yamato was born in 1990 in Shiga Prefecture. She completed her graduate studies in Fine Arts and Crafts at Kyoto University of Art and Design (now Kyoto University of the Arts) in 2015. She is currently based in Kyoto.
From a distance, Mio Yamato’s work may appear like a red lace draped over a white canvas. In reality, she begins at the edge of the canvas, placing tiny dots with red oil paint. As she continues, following this self-imposed rule, slight deviations and her breathing rhythm cause the red paint to appear to dance like a living organism.
It’s a release within rules, a trace of the activity of life itself. This time, she has prepared a collaboration with Takeshi Igawa’s black lacquer work. Unexpectedly, they resonate beautifully together, and we look forward to seeing what unfolds from this encounter.
